Gas City, Ind.— Leffler Academy played an instrumental role in a new bill to allow Indiana high school students to enroll in practical nursing programs and gain licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse earlier. Leffler Academy in Gas City, Indiana is an educational partner of the University of Saint Francis.
Leffler Academy was the first post-secondary institution in Indiana to develop, implement and successfully execute all required steps to allow a high school student to gain licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse while simultaneously graduating from high school. Senate Bill 176 passed through the Senate Health and Provider Services committee, allowing earlier entry into a practical nurse program. Students will still need to receive a high school diploma to become licensed by the state, but the bill allows students to begin an educational program while still in high school.
”When students learn about careers that align with their interest, they often become more motivated to excel academically and engage in activities that will help them achieve their goals” said Dr. Leffler,
“students who engage in career exploration earlier are more likely to choose postsecondary education that align with their career goals, helping them to plan more effectively for their future.”
Last November, Leffler Academy and Saint Francis announced an education collaboration to enhance educational programs and expand healthcare initiatives in nursing and allied health, creating new opportunities for students aspiring to healthcare careers and supporting Indiana’s healthcare providers in finding skilled professionals.
